Dr. Michael A. Civin: Education as the Cornerstone of Psychological Practice

For Dr. Michael A. Civin, education has never been a single achievement—it has been the foundation of an evolving professional philosophy. His career demonstrates how structured learning and real-world experience can work together to shape effective psychological practice.
Dr. Civin earned his undergraduate degree with cum laude honors from Harvard College in 1968. This early academic success was followed by studies at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he further explored medical and scientific disciplines.
In 1970, he completed his first Master of Arts degree at the University of Oregon. Rather than continuing immediately into doctoral studies, Dr. Civin entered the workforce, gaining professional experience that would later inform his academic pursuits.
More than a decade later, he returned to formal education at Adelphi University. At the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, he earned a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology in 1986 and completed his Ph.D. in 1988. His commitment to advanced training continued with a postdoctoral certificate in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, awarded in 1993.
This educational foundation supports Dr. Civin’s current clinical work. He serves as a senior psychologist at Rose Hill Psychological Services in the Bronx, a practice he co-founded in 2008. He also maintains a private practice in Manhattan, Astoria, and Bayville, which he has operated since 2007.
His clinical focus includes psychodiagnostics, adult and adolescent psychology, group therapy, and professional supervision. Beyond patient care, Dr. Civin has contributed to psychology education as a professor, associate professor, and faculty member. His scholarly writing has appeared in respected journals and academic publications.
Through sustained learning and disciplined application, Dr. Michael A. Civin exemplifies how education remains central to ethical and effective psychological practice.
